My Hometown

Hello everyone! I’m Amara Podes, and today we’re going to explore some amazing places in Balaoa and learn about the theories behind its name. Did you know that Balaoa has 7 sitios? Some of you might think that Cabunagan is a new barangay, but it’s actually part of Balaoa. There are two stories about how Balaoa got its name. You can find one version online by searching “how Balaoa got its name” on Google – I’ll even provide the link here to make it easier for us. Instead, I’ll share the other story with you.

According to this story, Balaoa was originally called Mageymey. One day, two Spaniards were exploring the area when they came across two kids playing with a wooden toy called “balbalawa”. The Spaniards approached the kids and asked them the name of the place, but the kids didn’t understand what they were asking. Thinking the Spaniards were referring to the toy, the kids simply said “Balbalawa”. However, the Spaniards pronounced it differently, and it eventually became “Balaoa
